Chris StricklandHometown ,
Waterford, CTIn 2006, during U.S. Army Calvary Scout Sgt. Chris
Strickland’s second Iraq deployment, he suffered critical injuries when
his Humvee struck a roadside bomb. The attack shattered both of Chris’
legs, his right arm had to be amputated below the elbow, he lost vision
in his right eye, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury.
After his medical discharge, the Purple Heart recipient
returned to Waterford, Connecticut and the home he shares with his wife
Mandi. Their son Bradley was born -- they named him after a close friend of
who was killed in Iraq. Today, Chris and his father own and operate an
auto parts store.
Still, as a result of his injuries, Chris has difficulty
maintaining balance and falls frequently, causing additional injuries
and frustrations. To help to make his home environment as safe as
possible, Heroes at HomeSM honored Chris and his family by providing
accessible-friendly repairs, including a new bathroom, new flooring and
railings, as well as modifying entryways to ensure safety and
accessibility. Now Chris says he can enjoy every room of the house with
his family.
